DWA: Taking It To The Limit!

Carlton Theatre February 7th 2010

The Background

'Irresistible' Iestyn Rees vs Dan Head
Back at A New Era Dan Head was 3 seconds away from progressing to the DWA Trophy finals when Iestyn Rees decided to distract referee Chris Roberts and allow Joel Redman to get the win. Dan Head was as you can imagine extremely upset with the referee and with Rees and demanded that he would get to go one on one with Rees at A Final Chapter, with DWA Officials all set to make the match Rees could not get medical clearance to partake the match and so it was moved to February 7th. With Rees doctors giving the all clear it seems that he has no where to hide and Head can now get his revenge.

The Match

Iestyn Rees def. Dan Head

IPW:UK: "From Behind The Announcer's Desk" May 2009
From www.ipwuk.com...

IPW:UK commentator Dave “Stats” Bradshaw reflects on an unforgettable month in the company’s history…

The accolade for the most significant moment of the past few weeks belongs to Alex Shane, who not only became the sixth man to wear the IPW:UK title but in the process was able to “right the wrong” he felt he had caused by indirectly helping the arrogant Iestyn Rees to become champion last September. The Showstealer admitted before his big match at Iron Fist in Swanley that he needed to prove he was still able to compete and be relevant in 2009, having not wrestled regularly for over two years. To my mind he blew that question out of the water with his performance against Rees – it looked as though Shane had never missed a day of ring time as he and the champion engaged in an epic war that told a hell of a story.

Shane’s pre-match comments must have played on the mind of Rees in the days before the match, as the challenger openly voiced the questions that some fans had been murmuring throughout his opponent’s reign – was he the finished article? Did he deserve to be the top man in British wrestling? Could he hold his own in a main event match that was expected to run for close to half an hour? Those questions were also resoundingly answered – the “Irresistible” one more than held his end of the bargain, controlling much of the encounter and leading by 4 falls to 2 by the time of the controversial ending to the match. After a super powerbomb by Shane, it looked as though both men would narrowly manage to answer the referee’s 10 count. But as Shane stumbled to his feet, Rees appeared to lose his grip on the rope he was using to pull himself up, causing him to fall to the floor and lose the belt via a technical knockout. I have looked back at the footage at least a dozen times now, and each time I am more convinced that Rees slipped because the rope was wet after a failed attempt to spray water in Shane’s face a few moments earlier.

Given the controversial nature of his defeat and the way he dominated so much of the fight, you would think Iestyn Rees would be falling over himself to cash in his rematch clause. But bizarrely, the former champion has not been seen or heard from since that night in Swanley – even Gilligan Gordon looked embarrassingly uneasy when I caught up with him a couple of weeks later and asked him about Rees’s whereabouts. Wherever he is sulking, Iestyn needs to pull himself together quickly because there are plenty of rivals threatening to leapfrog him in the race to be Shane’s first opponent.

Rees -'Impressive and Dominating...."

IPW:UK "Iron Fist", April 18th, Swanley - Kent

The Background

The Show Down
'Crowd popping moments...'
The main event was match of the night, and it was your prototypical "Alex Shane Match", so you know the drill. That's not a criticism particularly - everyone knows the "Hulk Hogan Match" and it still works nearly thirty years later. There was brawling around the arena, big dives onto large groups of men, trademark moves, run-ins, referee bumps. I enjoyed it though.

Iestyn looked good (not to mention bigger), and there were all the usual crowd-popping moments.

Crowd popping..... and eye watering, moments.

First fall was a double countout (so, it was 1-1). Alex then won a fall via DQ when Rees cracked him with a tyre iron (2-1 to Shane). Rees then won three straight (one pinfall and two near consecutive submissions to abdominal stretches) and was cruising. Then, when trying something off the top at about the 23 minute mark, Alex managed to turn it into a top rope powerbomb. The referee counted both men, and Alex struggled to his feet by the count of 10, while Iestyn tried and failed. Under Iron Fist rules, that knockout immediately ends the match. However, the finish didn't really get over with the crowd immediately because they didn't realise what they'd just seen until Alex's hand was raised. It's actually a great finish because even though Shane won, Rees was never pinned, never made to submit, and was actually leading 4-2 at the time of the knockout.

Iestyn stared a hole through Shane post match, so it seems that a rematch is a certainty (or perhaps a series of rematches).

The tyre iron come out - way to go Iestyn!!!!

The Results

IPW:UK - Iron Fist 2009

Venue: White Oak Leisure Centre, Swanley, Kent
Referees: Chris Roberts & Chris Hatch
Master of Ceremonies: 'Hardcore' John Atkins
Commentary: Dave Bradshaw & Billi Lightning

Results:

Pre-Show Match: Sha Samuels soundly defeated IPW:UK Training Graduate JD Sin via submission.

Match 1 - Non Title Match: British Tag Champions The Thrillers (Haskins/Hype, w/ 'Gentleman' Gilligan Gordon) defeated 'The Man That Gravity Forgot' Pac & The Tango Man via pinfall after a low-blow and rollup on Pac by Haskins.

Match 2 - Singles Grudge Match: Paul Robinson defeated his former tag team partner Marty Scurll via pinfall with a Shooting Star Press!

Match 3 - Singles Match: Former WWE Star 'Squire' Dave Taylor defeated former IPW:UK Champion Andy Boy Simmonz via pinfall after a Double-Underhook Suplex.

--Interval--.

Match 4 - Non-Title Grudge Match: 'Mr. IPW' Ashley Reed & All-England Champion Terry Frazier fought to a double disqualification.

Match 5 - Women's Match: Lucy Claydon defeated Janey B in both women's IPW:UK debuts, via pinfall after a spinebuster.

After the bout, the arrogant LT Summers, who had kicked Dave Bradshaw from commentary for the bout, entered the ring and once again berated the women and women's wrestling as a hole. And like last time, one of the females (this time Janey B) stood up for herself and knee'd Summers south of the border to the delight of the crowd!

Match 6- Main Event - Iron Fist IPW:UK Match: 'The Showstealer' Alex Shane defeated 'Irresistible' Iestyn Rees (c) (w/ 'Gentleman' Gilligan Gordon) via knockout after 24 minutes, via a top-rope powerbomb to become the NEW IPW:UK Champion! However, Rees will definately be cashing in his rematch clause, as at the time of the knockout Rees was winning the Iron Fist bout 4 falls to 2, and was cruising through to retaining his title had he stayed on his feet for 6 more minutes!
- Alex Shane vs. Iestyn Rees - Double Count Out [1:1]
- Alex Shane def. Iestyn Rees by DQ [2:1]
- Iestyn Rees def. Alex Shane [2:2]

The Reviews
UKFF
The Alex Shane match was exactly what I expected, except I could not see half of it, nor understand most of what was happening. Neither did many in the crowd.
Most of us did not understand the “Iron Fist” rules (bad audio as I explained earlier), and we lost track of what was happening as they wandered all over the hall in typical Alex Shane fashion.

... Iestyn Rees was looking particularly impressive and surprisingly dominating much of the match. Rees does seem to get better each time I see him.

I missed the end because by then there were so many kids leaping up and down all around the guard-rail that nobody who was sat down could see anything in the ring at all. So I have little idea how or why Alex Shane was declared champion, but he was. I suspect many of the crowd were equally confused.

Where this is going? ....

I got the impression that very few fans were excited about “Alex Shane”. He gained in popularity as the match continued because of the adorably evil tactics of Gilligan Gordon and his Thrillers.
The gathering of heroes in the ring after the match to celebrate his victory seemed half-hearted....
